The CNC Operator is responsible for running and maintaining Thermwood 5-axis machining centers (10’x40’ mill-turn) to produce precision composite parts, molds, and tooling. This role plays a vital part in upholding aerospace-quality standards, operating advanced equipment to manufacture large, complex components. In addition to machine operation, the CNC Operator will collaborate with engineers, mentor junior operators, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts on the shop floor.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
Operating and maintaining Thermwood 5-axis CNC machining centers for composite and tooling applications.
Reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings and models to ensure manufacturability and quality compliance.
Performing precise material cutting, fixturing, and measurement of composite molds, carbon fiber parts, acrylics, and metal subcomponents.
Executing setups and alignments with sub-thousandths inch accuracy (0.001”), utilizing indicators and probing systems.
Troubleshooting machine or process issues in coordination with programmers and engineers.
Mentoring junior CNC operators in machine setup, operation best practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
Leading root cause investigations on machining discrepancies and implementing corrective actions.
Collaborating with engineering and quality teams to refine machining processes and improve efficiency.
Minimum requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
3+ years of experience operating 5-axis Gantry-style CNC machining centers.
2+ years of experience cutting carbon fiber tools and parts.
Experience working with FANUC-controlled CNC machines.
Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
Proficient in machine axis alignment and verification using indicators and probing tools.
Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing.
Exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Willingness to work additional hours as needed to meet production and prototyping demands.

Light CNC programming experience, Mastercam preferred (preferred).
Experience machining large composite molds (plugs) or tooling (preferred).
Background in manual machining, CNC saw operation, and general fabrication skills (preferred).
Exposure to aerospace or advanced composites manufacturing environments (preferred).
Continued technical education or certifications in CNC operations (preferred).
